The Skrull empire was in chaos after Galactus had destroyed its throne world. The two met when Nebula joined her minions on this space ship. She met Captain Marvel when her minions warped a space ship out of the solar system which just happened to have Captain Marvel onboard. Although he was not dead, he had been turned to stone and therefore was not causing any problems. Nebula made her first appearance in Avengers #257 at a point when Thanos was not even in the picture.
She and her trusted aides teleported Sanctuary II out of the solar system after they had repaired the hyperdrives.
Not much of her life is known before this time. Nebula first came to prominence in Marvel Comics when she hijacked Sanctuary II which was used by Thanos as a base. While Nebula played by Karen Gillan in the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy movies is an adopted daughter of Thanos who has been upgraded to increase her abilities. Nebula in the comic is an infamous space pirate who may or may not be the granddaughter of Thanos. But the Nebula of the Marvel comics has a differing past than that of the movies. Nebula, however, is not a good example of this.
Many would assume that both iterations have similar stories, relationships and personality, and in many cases that is true. With that said, the MCU is based nearly entirely out of existing comic book characters and Nebula is no exception. Karen Gillan's interpretation of the blue, cybernetically enhanced daughter of Thanos has become a fan-favourite, as she has developed the character from a hateful secondary villain to the heartbroken girl, tortured by the Mad Titan throughout her entire life and who "only wanted a sister", all while seeking revenge on her sadistic foster father. This isn't strange, as she clearly has one of the most tragic and interesting character arcs in this cinematic universe. When Nebula made her big screen debut in Guardians of the Galaxy, she was presented as a minor character when compared to the rest of Marvel Studio's incredible roster but, over time, she has become a crucial player in the overall story of the MCU, with Endgame having a shot at showing just that.
